Co-Ed Adagio
Stunt gymnastics has its roots in the adagio lifts of ballet. Adagio is a musical term that means "slow" and the lifts are usually used in the pas de deux, or "dance for two". Adagio lifts are not as dramatic as the acrobatic stunts of stunt gymnastics, but these lifts are used as transistions for the bigger tricks. Ballet has its roots in the court dances of the nobility during the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe. The female dancer is called a ballerina and the male dancer is called the danseur. Because of these royal roots, the danseurs were considered gentlemen whose purpose in the ballet was to exalt and showcase the ballerina. So the danseur will stay behind the ballerina, and lift her to make her look light as a feather floating on the air. This part of stunt gymnastics heritage is being lost in the industry. It is the Stunt Gym's philosophy that young men should be gentlemen with young ladies. The boys will be taught to be kind, patient and courteous to the girls when they work together. |
