Healthy Bodies
Require Healthy Diets

There three major factors in natural physical health: nutrition, exercise and rest. Here at the Stunt Gym we believe that healthy students come from healthy families. If the parents follow the guidelines of health, then children will follow that example. If the live on junk food, no exercise nor rest, then the children will follow suit. Obesity can be taught. Obesity tends to run in families and sometimes this is contributed to genes that make a person more susceptible to weight gain, but this is the exception not the rule. Health is a family issue, and all the family must participate in healthy lifestyle choices.

According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), obesity in adults has increased by 60% within the past twenty years and obesity in children has tripled in the past thirty years. Children who are obese are in danger of being adults who are obese. They have a 75% greater chance of obesity than their slender class mates. Childhood obesity is considered a health crisis. Obese children tend to live 5 to 15 years less than people of average weight or mild weight problems. These health problems can be life threatening or significantly shorten the life span of an obese person. A staggering 33% of American adults are obese and obesity-related deaths have climbed to more than 300,000 a year, second only to tobacco-related deaths.

The following video is an extreme case of obesity, and is shocking to see, but ends with the encouragment that if he could lose the weight, so can anyone else.

There are only a few basic causes of obesity. Over eating, eating foods that are difficult to burn off, and a lack of exercise is the leading cause of obesity. A sedentary lifestyle is known to contribute to obesity. Thyroid disorders can contribute to obesity, as well as a few other physical conditions. Health problems from obesity can lead to other problems such as a lack of mobility, depression, ostracization, fatigue, shortness of breath, and a lack of motivation. These factors can make it difficult for an obese person to lose the weight necessary to maintain a higher level of health. However, the vast majority of obesity cases are caused by consuming more calories than are used in a twenty four hour period for a long period of time.

There are few treatments for obesity other than changes in diet and exercise. Eating lower calorie foods and doing daily exercise will encourage the body to naturally lose weight, which is by far the healthiest. However, there are other treatment options available for those who are not able to lose weight the healthy and natural way, but those can only be advised by medical professionals.

There are many fad diets, and one should not participate in them without sound medical advise. Basic nutritional guidelines have been known for decades. The food chart on the right is just one example of this basic formula of balanced diets from the food groups: grains, vegetables, dairy meats and water. The obese man in the video was overweight yet dying of malnutrition since he lived on junk food.

In my own diet I have participated in the blood type diet. I am not endorsing this diet from a medical position, and I state first that it is controversial. It makes sense to me that if God created us with different characteristics, then differents food will be more beneficial to some than others. I have haphazardly followed this diet for my blood type. Whether I am actually healthier because of it, I can not say. But I have noticed that the foods in his list for me stop acid reflux, flatulence and bloating, so, for that reason alone, I have been following it.
